Vintage bride v. Modern bride

Ever looked at your parents wedding pictures and realise how diferrent their weddings were from how it is done now?  There was sheer elegance, simplicity, modesty and femininity. There was always something so chaste and ethereal about our parents' wedding pictures. Whenever I go to visit my friends and look at the wedding pictures on the wall its the same, shoulders covered, long sleeves, minimal jewelry, flowing dresses (not the skin tight ones we rock today).

But unlike the old more emphasis is placed this days on extravagance. This days, brides are made to look all sexed up, more emphasis is on massive jewelry, make up, and many brides are on their worst behaviour on their wedding day the list goes on and on.

Looking at several wedding pictures and videos from the 70s and 80s,  I came to the conclusion that vintage brides always exuded sweet innocence. They were also very feminine and modest

Weddings had more meaning then, it was more of a sobering day than an outlandish celebration and it really wasn't about money because even the rich then had expensive weddings but really modest and not unnecessarily outlandish. (Princess Grace of Monaco, Prince Charles and Diana)

More significance was placed on the solemnization proper and every thing done at the ceremony symbolised something important e.g. the bride being veiled walking down the aisle meant she was chaste and unspoiled, and was to be given to the groom intact; the groom lifting up the veil to kiss his bride signifies the freedom to enter into conjugal relations with his wife. Also when they exchanged vows it was an oath/covenant which could never be broken.

Somehow over the years all this meanings have become  lost on us and we have let ourselves become carried away by all the colour and funfare.

So to all the brides to be, when making decisions about your wedding- from the choice of dress, to the hair, to the faces you'll make on that day (nothing wrong with practicing your best wedding pose before your wedding) just have it at the back of your mind that no matter what you will not feel weird when you look at your wedding pictures 20 years from now.

Plenty love,

Mwah!
